Who we are
For over thirty years a highly trained team of medical geneticists at Newcastle University and the Royal Victoria Infirmary have offered one of the UK’s leading paternity testing services.
In 1995 this service became NorthGene under the leadership of Professor Sir John Burn, an internationally renowned geneticist. Professor Sir John Burn MD FRCP FRCPCH FRCOG FMedSci is Medical Director and Head of the Institute of Human Genetics, Honorary consultant clinical geneticist at the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Chair of the National Institute of Health Research Genetics Committee and Lead Clinician NHS North East.
He was also a founder member of the Human Genetics Commission from 2000-2005 and helped draft the UK code of practice for paternity testing. It was his vision to make NorthGene Ltd a not for profit company, channelling all profits back into medical research, training and education.
Professor Sir John Burn was made a Knight in the Queen's Honours List published on 31st December 2009.
